Morocco’s national football team continues to enhance the Kingdom’s standing on the international stage, not only through its sporting achievements but also by projecting a positive cultural and civilizational image that has made it one of the country’s most influential instruments of soft power

According to a report published by the African Center for Strategic Studies and Digitalization*, titled Morocco and the World Cup: Between Sporting Achievement, Media Momentum, and Soft Power Building,” the accomplishments of the Atlas Lions have gone far beyond the football pitch. The report argues that the team’s success has become a strategic asset, reinforcing Morocco’s media visibility, diplomatic influence, and cultural presence worldwide

The report highlights that the national team’s impressive performances, combined with the exemplary conduct displayed by players both on and off the field, have contributed significantly to promoting a positive image of Morocco. It points to values such as family unity, discipline, humility, respect for opponents, and pride in national identity—qualities that have received widespread praise from international media outlets and football fans across the globe

It further notes that the widely shared scenes of Moroccan players celebrating victories alongside their mothers, as well as their demonstrations of solidarity and respect, were far more than emotional sporting moments. These images conveyed powerful cultural and humanitarian messages, presenting Morocco as a nation that successfully balances authenticity with openness while remaining deeply rooted in its traditions and value

The report emphasizes that this unprecedented media exposure has provided Morocco with symbolic capital that would be difficult to generate through conventional promotional campaigns. Football, it argues, has become an effective tool of cultural diplomacy, strengthening the Kingdom’s international reputation, attracting the interest of investors and tourists, and enhancing its positive image among global public opinion

It also underlines the importance of investing in sports as a strategic driver of development and international influence, particularly as Morocco prepares to host major global sporting events, including the 2030 FIFA World Cup. These events are expected to create new opportunities to further expand the Kingdom’s regional and international profile

The report concludes that Morocco’s national football team has evolved into a genuine symbol of the country’s soft power. Today, the value of the Atlas Lions extends beyond victories and trophies to encompass the human values they represent and the bridges of trust and understanding they help build between peoples, further consolidating Morocco’s position as a nation that combines sporting excellence with cultural influence and international prestige
